Chile is a country cut in the Andes. This means tradition in winter sports and plenty of snow at resorts. Pertinho of Santiago, for example, there are four ski resorts within easy reach, one for each profile.
Just choose your class and play!
Step One: Select Ski Station
If your goal is just to see snow, may not need to go to a ski resort, actually. Departing from Santiago towards Mendoza you can get to the range, stop the car in a safe place and play freely.
Already cross the border, unfortunately, is super bureaucratic (more on cruising car here). Also, the road is long, tiring, with heavy and curvy road. On the Argentine side, in Mendoza, this type of program to roll.
There are four ski resorts in the region of Santiago:
Valle Nevado: The most famous, the most style, the most fashionable, the most complete, the most well attended, ie, the most "in". Consequently, the most expensive transfer, the most expensive ticket, food more expensive, besides being further. Voted best destination of snow during the northern summer.
La Parva: the most exclusive, summarized in classudos resorts where there are fine hotels and elegant restaurants take their toll. It is very small and close to El Colorado.
El Colorado: more affordable, more options, an abundant skiable surface, very close.
Farellones: the most populace, chosen by Santiaguinos as your "beach" winter. More muvucada, nearest, most appropriate for children and beginners to have several other options besides ski and snowboard. Cheaper too.
Second step: Transfer to the mountain
Despite the measly 46km that separate the city from the mountain, get ready for 1 hour (1: 30) to climb and 1:30 - 2: 00h to descend. The traffic is mainly driven on holidays and Sundays. There is no other way to reach not facing the various superfechadas curves.
If driving remember the following tricks:
1.0 car will leave you a little tense when you are queued up to 20km / h in first gear engaged.
The track is narrow loooong, from 08h to 13h SOAR and the cars only after 16h DESCENDING cars only (do not pass two vehicles beside each other). Monday through Friday, from 20h to 08h and the road has no restriction.
In the snail, are 42 curves 180 degrees! If you frequently get sick, care!
When it snows, the road is blocked. Police requires (and enforces) the current size (just take that with you) and if you have ice on the runway, may require placement. Note: near the police station there is a place to rent these currents.
To hire a shuttle (and get rid of the responsa of driving under the above conditions), it is very easy. The Ski Total (which seems to be the largest provider of rental and snow equipment) takes you to any such station. Its headquarters is at Av. Apoquindo 4900 lj 37-46 or Av. Nueva Las Condes, 12375. The price is based on $ 10,000 round trip on the same day (Valle Nevado to $ 12,000).
El Colorado and Valle Nevado itself offer shuttle (can even roll off if you already have a ski pass). Us well in independent style, hired a semi-private shuttle (a van for two groups: us 4 people and another family with 5 people) for two stations for a very good price: $ 10,000 per person, roundtrip. Recommend: Austral Services Apoquindo Av, Tel 4830 Local 25 (2) 851 2990 info@australservices.cl.
There are packages of "city tour" for several seasons during the same day. I'll give you my opinion: go only to one (Farellones is having more leisure options, so I recommend!) And spend the whole day. You will see that it has as entendiar.
Step Three: What to do in the mountains?
If you're just going to enjoy the place, see skiers enjoy the snow, take amazing pictures and eat a little something up there, no need to spend a penny (except in restaurant, perhaps in bathrooms). But if you want to engage in any sport, you have to pay a fee, depending on the chosen activity.
1Ski or Snowboard: you have the option to buy a day pass, half-day, multi-day, off for over 65 years with, among others. The passes entitle you to use all lifts of the season. Keep an eye on the maps with the degree of difficulty of the clues to not meddle in advanced tracks are still a beginner. After climbing, they only let you down skiing, do not let down the elevators (this happened to a couple of miners near us in the Guria was afraid to go down and her boyfriend had to come down carrying the equipment so that it guard let her use the cable car). Examples of ticket prices for the day / adult / high season: $ 11,000 Farellones El Colorado La Parva $ 33,000 $ 33,000 $ 35,000 Valle Nevado
Class ski: in all the centers you can take classes to learn to ski. There are several options: for children, for adults, individuals, group. At the height of the season, it is advisable to arrive early not to run the risk of getting out of any class. The section for beginners in Farellones is well recommended. Attention: you need not pay for a ski pass to have classes in school. Examples Price: High class adult conference season with ticket Farellones $ 19,000 El Colorado La Parva $ 25,000 $ 23,000 $ 25,000 Valle Nevado
Scenic: a cool option for non-skiers in El Colorado is the "Panoramic Silla" ($ 10,000). You pay a much cheaper rate than the pass all day and can use some of the lifts to climb up to the lookout there something in the mountain. Very worth the penalty!
Other sports: in Farellones, a very cool option is the "tubing": a toboggan when you sat down on a buoy, after being loaded by an elevator to the top ($ 8,000 for 1h kidding). You have to arrive early to secure tickets as there are shifts with time and number of tourists set. There zipline in Farellones, Valle Nevado has Heliski in La Parva has guided snowshoe hikes, etc, etc, etc.
Fourth step: renting equipment
If you go skiing or snowboarding (or their respective classes), you will need the corresponding equipment. If you can not take, must rent, obviously. Remember that there atop prices will be much more salty than in shops of central London, for example. See the list of what you may need:
1 Joint Boots, Ski, Sticks (or Surfboard): this set does not escape you. Have to rent. Prices in Chile, at least, are much better than in Switzerland! (Normal adult Kit in Valle Nevado La Parva $ 17,000 $ 23,000 $ 18,000 El Colorado Farellones $ 18,000)
Helmet: increasingly recommended as the risk of accidents is always there and you will not want to risk spoiling your holiday by a moment of bread-duragem, right? (Valle Nevado La Parva $ 4,000 $ 4,500 $ 5,000 El Colorado Farellones $ 5,000)
Impervious gloves: although also mandatory, you should buy one instead of renting. Not undertake much space in the suitcase and the rental price is almost the price of a new one.
Glasses (Googles): those giant sunglasses to protect their retinas serve the risk of detachment by high light intensity of the sun reflected from the snow white one. Believe me, wear sunglasses is VERY important! But use a good sunglasses (common) also breaks the branch.
Clothes: you should be wearing light clothing that will allow their easy movement while you keep warm. I, for one, I was all sweaty when I skied the first time, almost died of heat using wool sweater and jeans underneath the thermal shelter. If you're not skiing, pays no rent linens! Do not fall for it stolen! And if you go, say the same thing said in relation to gloves.
Shoes for walking in the snow: a few places rent waterproof and non-slip boots that facilitate walking in stations for non-skiers. If you are on a tight budget, or rent because you will get to walk through it all with a common tennis too (rented once, never to waste money on it). Worth the worth buying (to have and not need to rent) a boot / waterproof shoes (like these Goretex) which serve both to visit the snow as Batidão for the day-to-day, and for trails and rainy days.
With all this in mind, it's just fun. Looks like a lot, believe me: there after everything becomes easier to understand and the worst: after going once, makes you want to go forever!
Try not to waste money for that which will not need to because I do not know if you noticed, but never skiing does not come cheap. With a little ingenuity and planning, can be more "fair" at least.
